This Black History Month, discover “The Hands That Built Croydon”, a powerful portrait exhibition from the Windrush Generation Legacy Association, celebrating the people, stories and contributions that have helped shape Croydon’s Black community.
Featuring professionally produced portraits, personal stories, hands and meaningful objects connected to the individuals featured, the exhibition shines a light on the everyday heroes who have built homes, businesses, families and communities across the borough.
From the Windrush generation to younger members of Croydon’s Black community, the exhibition celebrates resilience, achievement, creativity and the lasting impact of those making a difference today.
Visitors are invited to take their time exploring the stories behind the portraits and discovering the people who continue to help Croydon’s communities thrive.
The Hands That Built Croydon will be on display throughout October in Sainsbury’s Square at The Whitgift, providing an opportunity to visit, reflect and celebrate the people and stories that make Croydon what it is today.
The exhibition is presented as part of Black History Month 2026, under the theme “Honouring Our Communities.”
